Updating and Maintaining Your Windows 95 System

All computer systems are unique and may contain various programs, files or hardware configurations which may be adversely affected by running these programs or following our maintenance tips and procedures. Although we have tested these programs and tips on many systems and have not experienced major difficulties, we caution all users to seek expert technical support if they have doubts about their system compatibility with these programs.

These files and fixes are for Windows95 systems which have not been upgraded or customized and were installed prior to late fall of 1996. You probably do not need these upgrades if your computer came with Windows95 and you purchased later than February 1, 1997.

Our-Town Internet Service will not accept any responsibility or liability for system problems which may occur as a result of running these programs or conducting maintenance tips. We have only a limited capability to provide assistance or support if you encounter difficulties.


The following information is provided for new and/or inexperienced Windows 95 users to assist them in maintaining and updating their system. The files listed below are provided by Microsoft and are free to Windows 95 users.

These files should be downloaded and saved directly on the desktop. After downloading, disconnect from Our-Town, exit all programs you may have running. Double clicking on the files will begin the extraction and setup routines. Install the files in sequence and restart the computer only after you have installed all the files. Once you have updated your system, restart the computer and then delete the files from the desktop by dragging them into the recycle bin.


Microsoft updates and patches for the Windows 95 operating system

Windows 95 Service Pack 11235 KContains updated drivers, patches, and fixes for Windows 95 (most of which are already available on this page, but it's still worth the download). Kernel32 Update 290 KThis update resolves a memory leak which occurs when opening and closing a Socket using the Windows Sockets API. This leak occurs in the allocation and deallocation of the memory for the socket by the Windows 95 kernel (Kernel32.dll version 4.00.950). This update resolves this memory leak in the Windows 95 kernel. For more info, Click Here!
Windows 95/OLE 32 Update 404 KUpdate to OLE2 components for Windows 95. Resolves certain issues with multiple concurrent ODBC operations, OLE link resolution over networks, and random disk contents being stored in OLE documents. For more info, Click Here!
Microsoft Password List Update278 KBMicrosoft introduced a bug into the password list in the Service Pack 1 which can result in some passwords (including your password for Dial-Up-Networking) being unable to be saved. This fixes it. For more info, check the Microsoft Password List Update Home Page.
Disk Type Specific Driver Update for Win95114 KBThis update resolves a problem in Windows 95 which may, in certain specific configurations, lead to corrupted data on extended partitions on large IDE drives. For more info, Click Here.
