Dr. Mary Joe Fitzgerald Clendenin grew up in rural Texas. She attended a three-room country school for ten years, and after completing there, she walked the other direction for the eleventh year to complete high school.

She attended John Tarleton College, a two year intuition at that time. She earned a BS Degree from Abilene Christian University while teaching.

At New Mexico Highlands University, she earned the MS Degree in Natural Science in three summers.

She earned the Education Specialist Degree in Guidance and Counseling from New Mexico State University, and also an Education Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction.
